The Lost Boys - The Dawn of the Vampire Franchise Era

Santa Carla Lost Boys Vampires

Before the Vampire Diaries and Twilight movies there was The Lost Boys, a satire filled movie about “bloodthirsty” vampires. The Bram’s Stokers Dracula of course remains the classic when it comes to vampire movies. The Lost Boys actually started a cult genre that stuck with the youngsters. The movie also inspired vampire theme merchandise such as T-shirts and if you are fan of vampire movies you know how much you love them.

The movies is known for its satiric attitude and teenagers who wear rock star clothes but act like they belong to a gang riding on their bikes around. It was a hit 1987 comedy movie that perfectly captured the mood of the teenage life – the confusion about the real world and how to separate strange from the real. Throw in a bunch of now well known actors like Kiefer Sutherland and, Jason Patrick and you have a fun movie to watch. If you ever want to kill a vampire without the gore, this is the movie to watch. It is a “How to Kill a Vampire 101”  with bathtub of holy water and garlic, lots of plastic water pistol filled with holy water .

Here is a quick recap of the story for those who are not familiar with the storyline:

The story starts with recently divorced mother of two, Lucy, moving to the Coastal Town of Santa Carla with her sons Sam and Michael. While Lucy finds a job in a local video store, Sam and Michael explore the boardwalk and meet a few people and a biker gang. It’s through them they learn about the vampire activity in the town.  Michael gets caught up with the gang in hope to win favor of Star, a girl who seems to be the girlfriend of the gang leader, David, played by Kiefer Sutherland. Michael drinks a little wine offered by David which turns out to be blood and soon he realizes he has become a vampire.  What follows is a series of hilarious events from Sam freaking out at his brother’s transformation and trying to prevent him from making his first kill (which will turn him into a real vampire) to bleached haired David and his gang hanging from their toes from the rafters looking all chalk white. The later scenes show how the two brothers and their friends try to fight David and his gang with garlic and holy water, which is the most hilarious part of the movie. Eventually Michael, Star and Laddie return to their former self.

The Lost Boys is considered as one of the best Vampire movies not the least because of the comic relief and how it describes the perfect reaction of a freaked out teenager to a not-so normal situation. With the perfect casting and storyline, it has struck cord with people and laid down precedents for the future Vampire movies and shows.

The Lost Boys Relevance

The Lost Boys has a significant influence on the young generation with their rock star leather-and-spike style clothes and long hairstyle. It is a popular theme for the Halloween parties and modern t-shirts. The movie is loosely based on the classic Peter Pan (Thus the name of the movie) character and has converted the story into this hilarious vampire movie.
